How to train a dog the three basics: sit, lie down and saty
If you have done your homework before you got your new family member in the house. A dog the have the quality of self confidence is one skill you should work hard to get. Give your dog a lot of love and affection simply to create a strong bonds. With this core value in place you can start to train your dog as soon a three months of age.
how to train a dog. to the level of self-confidence the right way, will make the advance training in the future a lot easier. No is it time to start implement a few simple commands like sit, down and stay .
Never ever use any sort of physical violence towards your dog in training session, as it will come back to bite you, I hope it will if you use violence.
How do we teach a puppy to sit in a short period of time. Have the dogs favorite food in your hand. Go up to the dog and let it know what’s in your hand. Use the word sit while you hold your hand closed in front of his mouth repeating the word sit. And believe me, he will at some point sit down if there is some really good stuff in your hand. If your dog don’t sit after a session for bout 10-15 minutes, the toy or food where simply not attractive enough. If so just change to an other reward. Maybe a toy is a better way to work with
Now it is time learn your dog to lie down on your command. We use a similar approach here as well. Have a food of choice in your hand and approach the dog and make sure he knows what it is in your hand. The difference to this simple strategy is when your dog is focused on what‚Äôs in your hand, then move your hand towards the ground and when you keep giving the command down, or lie down. Your dog will follow your hand down to the ground and at some point they will lie down, and the reward is given immediately. I can not express how critical the reward is for teaching a dog anything. You will enjoy any training as long as the dog associate it with fun. Wouldn’t you?
The last command that is fairly easy but requires a bit more work. The question on how to train a dog. to stay is a bit more complicated for a puppy. Approach the dog with the same rewards your used in the previous sessions. When your dog either sitting or lie down, then introduce the new word: stay. Then start walk backward with your eyes on the dog. Start with a distance from 5 – 10 yards. When the dog stays until you call him to you, again reward and prais him a lot.
Cheers
Tom
